Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief the selector has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
